Basic Job Description:

Paint walls, equipment, buildings, bridges, and other structural surfaces, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns. May remove old paint to prepare surface prior to painting. May mix colors or oils to obtain desired color or consistency.

Job Duties and Tasks for: "Painter, Construction and Maintenance"

1) Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges, and/or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.

2) Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.

 

3) Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements and/or work orders.

4) Cover surfaces with dropcloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.

5) Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.


 

6) Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil and thinning and drying additives in order to obtain desired colors and consistencies.

7) Polish final coats to specified finishes.

8) Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors or homeowners in order to determine work requirements.

9) Remove fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.

10) Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water and/or abrasive blasting.

11) Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, and/or sanding machines.

12) Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.

13) Bake finishes on painted and enameled articles, using baking ovens.

14) Cut stencils, and brush and spray lettering and decorations on surfaces.

 

15) Erect scaffolding and swing gates, or set up ladders, to work above ground level.

16) Select and purchase tools and finishes for surfaces to be covered, considering durability, ease of handling, methods of application, and customers' wishes.

17) Spray or brush hot plastics or pitch onto surfaces.

18) Use special finishing techniques such as sponging, ragging, layering, or faux finishing.

19) Waterproof buildings, using waterproofers and caulking.
