1) Confer with other workers about machine setups and operational specifications.
2) Operate gas or oil furnaces to heat metal to proper temperature prior to forging.
3) Place metal pieces in furnaces, then remove them, using hand tongs or overhead cranes, when metal color indicates proper forging temperatures.
4) Repair, maintain, and replace parts on dies.
5) Sharpen cutting tools and drill bits, using bench grinders.
6) Trim and compress finished forgings to specified tolerances.
7) Measure and inspect machined parts to ensure conformance to product specifications.
8) Position and move metal wires or workpieces through a series of dies that compress and shape stock to form die impressions.
